History is the study of our past, though human beings are concerned more with their present and future, but ,at the same, time the roots of our present lie in our past and sometimes the mistakes committed in the past are to be paid in the present. Similarly, what mistakes we are committing at present will definitely affect our future life. The same rule applies to spiritual life. [In order to make it better we must have definite knowledge of our past i.e. creation of Adam). The first incident in our spiritual life as human beings is conduct of Adam and Eve in paradise. The story of Adam’s creation and his behavior along with the consequences of such behavior has been described by the Quran at many places and all those statements are necessarily to be kept in mind for coming to proper conclusion. As a matter of fact, it is believed that Adam (AS) along with his wife were sent to earth due to the reason that they ate something out of the tree, which had been prohibited for them and they had been warned if they violated the command they would become wrongdoers . “And we said: O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and eat ye freely (of the fruits) thereof where ye will; but come not nigh this tree lest ye become wrongdoers.”2-35.However, this act of eating from the prohibited tree was committed due to instigation and deceit practised on Adam and Eve by their basic enemy, Satan. “Then Satan whispered to them that he might manifest unto them that which was hidden from them of their shame, and he said: Your Lord forbade you from this tree only lest ye should become angels or become of the immortals”7:20 .commonly it is said that as a punishment Adam and Eve were sent to earth. However deeming sending of the couple to earth as punishment is wrong. As reason for creation of human beings was to discharge the duties of Allah on earth and not to live in paradise. The Quran says “behold, thy- lord said to the angles, I will create a vicegerent to the earth.” So the decision was to send them to earth and not to keep them always in the paradise. Hence sending them to earth never means a punishment but completion of the Plan of Allah .
After eating out of prohibited tree Quran says , in chapter II that they were directed to go to the earth at the same time Adam learnt some words from Allah and his Lord turned towards him i.e., he accepted apology and repentance, then another command was given directing them to go to earth. The question arises that once Allah forgave him (TABA ALai-Hi) then possibility of inflicting the punishment does not arises at all. Even ordinary human beings, when forgive or accept apology, do not inflict the punishment. How the authority most benevolent and most merciful might have inflicted the punishment after it had accepted the apology. The second direction given only shows that time for deputation to earth has come for discharging duties and responsibilities there. As is known to every body that Satan had shown his intention to lead the human beings astray and he left no stone unturned to fulfill his nefarious design. He deceived Adam and Eve by swearing falsely and instigated them to eat fruit of the prohibited tree. This was done by him with the sole abject of making their private parts naked. The intention of Iblis to deprive Adam and Eve of the veil is more clearly shown by saying “then began Satan to whisper suggestion to them in order to reveal their shame to them that was hidden from them.” So the punishment of indiscipline was making the private parts (shame) manifest. According to this verse intention of Satan is clear, it may be worth to mention that lam with Kasra before Muzaria is used to show desire and intention of individual behind an act. The Iblis got what he intended “they both ate of the tree and so their nakedness appeared to them.” The language used in both verses is to the same effect. At one place “Fa” which shows reason of an act has been used and at another place “Falama” meaning “when” have been used. By these verses, therefore there is no doubt both of them were deprived of the veil, covering their shame, which had been provided, to them in the paradise. However, it could safely be held that prior to eating out of prohibited both Adam and Eve were leading a good and prosperous life, in heaven, where they had none of the worries like of food shelter and dress. Once they committed this act, they were deprived of these facilities and sent to earth, which was their already intended and designed dwelling place.
Last and not the least important fact is that if the violation of the divine command has resulted in sending the Adam to earth as punishment ,are we also on the earth as a punishment .If we believe so that will be against the divine rules of justice .If Adam violated the command why his offspring are suffering the punishment. Allah does not punish any one for the sins of other. ‘Say: "Should I seek another Rabb besides Allah when He is the Rabb of everything?" Every soul will reap the fruits of its own deeds; no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another. Ultimately you will return to your Rabb, and He will resolve for you your disputes.”’ There are many other verses of the Quran which testify none can be punished for the act of another. “No bearer of a burden will bear another's burden, and if a heavy laden person cries out for help, none will come forward to share the least of his burden, even though he be a close relative.35-18.Then again we have chapter 53:38-39 “That no laden one shall bear another's load, And that man hath only that for which be maketh effort,” So every one is to be rewarded or punished for his own acts and not for the acts of others. That is justice and Allah is not only doing justice but vehemently directs his slaves to do so. Now if we say that children are on the earth for the sin of their father is declaring Allah oppressor which is nothing but contemptuous. It is also a bitter fact that our beliefs, correct or incorrect affect our conduct .One who believes his life on this planet result of punishment can not treat the life as treated by a person believing it as blessing. His approach towards this life will be surely negative .He will feel dejected and shirk his duties and ultimately will treat the life as burden .This negative approach is sure to destroy him.
It is necessary to mention that the desire to wear the dress covering the nakedness and shame is not something thursted on individual by society or law but it is natural. Quran makes it clear by saying that once they were deprived of the natural dress covering shame and nakedness, they started concealing their bodies by the leaves of the paradise. “And they began to sew together their bodies by leaves of the trees of paradise to cover their shame.” It is also evident that the first device used by the Satan to lead the human beings astray was making them naked, Accordingly Quran warns the human beings that you must not fall a prey to Satan as your ancestor Adam and Eve did . Since, sexual deviations are considered most heinous sin, all the provisions have been made to save the human beings from such deviations. It has been ordered” Not come Neigh to adultery for it is an indecent (deed) and an evil way”. The words are not “do not commit the adultery”, but “do not go near it.” Thereby blocking all things, which lead, help promote and facilitate it. Islam it has made it non-compoundable offence and offence against state. The punishment is very deterrent and heinous. Besides, the term adultery is in its scope wider than of modern law enforced in the countries where the penal laws other than Islamic code are in operation.
